People here seemed to open, briefly, in the margins of ordinary life.

Every serious tea drinker knows the state. A strong cup on an empty stomach, and the world sharpens. The heart quickens. Something you have been holding for years begins to loosen.

Across Singapore, people slip into it without noticing: at a kitchen table, in a therapist's office, beside a lit pool at 2am, on the last bus. In that brief, unguarded moment, they catch sight of what they have been carrying: an old grief, a first love, a choice they never quite made, the slow realisation that this city has become home.

Tea Drunk is a collection of eight literary short stories about expats and locals, newcomers and those who have stayed for decades, and the moments when they open up, not always to each other, but to themselves. Tender and wry, it is a book about love and loneliness, family and belonging, and what it takes to simply continue.

Eight quiet, closely observed stories about arriving, staying, and the small rituals that hold a life together in Singapore, one cup at a time.

Chris Schilling is an academic and author of several scholarly publications. Tea Drunk is his first work of fiction.
